INTRODUCTION TO SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING
The main goal in the creation of this website is to help learners better understand / grasp the concept of self-directed learning. This goal is especially focused / concentrated on those learners who are adult learners. In order to correctly go about doing this, the definitions of terms need to be established at the beginning, so that there will be no confusion as you, the learner, progresses navigates throughout the website.
The idea of self-directed learning and self-education, "according to Kulich (1970), played an important part in the lives of the Greek philosophers. Socrates described himself as a self-learner who capitalized on opportunities to learn from those around him" (as cited by Brockett and Hiemstra, 1991, p.7). When talking about self-directed learning it is also important to mention the importance of being able to learn by yourself. This is the case that two other famous Greek philosophers, Aristotle and Plato emphasized. They emphasized the importance of young people being able to develop wisdom without the assistance of adults.
There are still other emphases stressed as being important to the development of self-education when research is performed and the beliefs of reputable Italian self-directed educators are discovered. Chiara Biasin (2008) writes that, "In Italy today, self-directed learning includes two principal trends. One primary direction of meaning focuses its attentions on the processes and the strategies that allow adults to direct and personalize their own learning. A second line of thought refers to the wider process of life growth or professional development pursued by an adult" (p.2).
As it can be noted, or seen, there is more than one way that self-directed learning can be defined. This has been, and continues to be, the case in the Adult Learning field of education. As stated, the goal of the creation of this website is to help eliminate any confusion that may exist, as well as provide more information to any person(s) that are already studying in the adult education field.
